I live on the outskirts of Leeds, close enough to the
countryside for it to feel like I don't live in a big city.
Here I live with my lovely husband, two gorgeous
children and three cats.
Ever since I was young I have been brought up to
know all the names of the flora and fauna we have
seen on walks, holidays aswell as around us in our
everyday lives. I suppose this coupled with the fact
that my mother is very artistic and creative has
steered me down the path I have followed. Hence throughout my formal education I have been keen to study both biology and art and design.
At A-level I studied Social and Environmental
Biology, Art and Design and Textiles. After this I
took a year out to run my own jewellery business.
One year on and I went off to study Applied Biology
at Leeds University. In my final year I carried out a
dissertation looking at parasites in freshwater
shrimps and had to stain my own microscope slides and study them at length. The amazing cell structures and colours taken on by the tissues inspired me further in my love for both art and science.
Once my degree had come to an end I studied
to become a teacher and in fact that is what I
have done for the past 10 years. I have been
able to influence the teaching and learning of
both science and art within the school as I
have been both science and art coordinator.
All the time I have kept my hand in with my
painting and drawing and have now become
part time so that I can focus on my primary passion, creating beautiful art work. I use mainly acrylics to paint with but also create pieces of art from felt, which I taught myself to make, and I create mosaics from miniscule pieces of coloured paper.
In the past year I have been able to step up my
productivity as my children gradually get older
and I have had a little studio built outside so
that my equipment and materials don't
encroach too much on our living space. It is
brilliant having my own creative space and it is
affectionately known by my daughter as 'Mummy's Little House' which I rather like.
So that is a little bit about me and why I do what I do. I hope you like
my work enough to leave a positive comment and even better to
purchase a piece to brighten up your life!
